REIDAR is a Professor of Petroleum Investment and Decision Analysis at the University of Stavanger, Norway where he specialises in uncertainty assessment, risk management, investment analysis, decision sciences, and market based valuation. He is also chief scientist at IRIS – International Research Institute of Stavanger.
Prior to joining the University of Stavanger, Reidar has worked at the University of Adelaide, Landmark Graphics (Vice President responsible for Landmark’s solutions in reservoir management, production and drilling and then Landmark’s solutions in decision analysis, economic evaluation and business modelling), Smedvig Technologies Software Solutions (now Roxar), ODIN Reservoir Software and Services, IBM (working on high-performance reservoir simulation) and at Statoil as a reservoir engineer. Reidar’s early working years were spent as a roughneck in the North Sea and as a seaman in the Norwegian merchant marine.
He has provided consulting and professional development services for companies such as ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, Unocal, Petronas, Saudi Aramco, Norsk Hydro, Mærsk, RAG, Statoil, DONG, as well as the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
Reidar sits on the Stanford University Petroleum Investment Committee and the board of an oil company and an IT company. Twice an SPE Distinguished Lecturer ( “Uncertainty Assessment and Risk Management in Exploration & Production” and “Would You Know a Good Decision if You Saw One?”) he’s also published papers on topics such as investment modelling, decision-making, stochastic reservoir modelling, fuzzy logic and reservoir management. Reidar is co-author of “Decision-Making and Uncertainty Management”, published by the Society of Petroleum Engineers in 2009.
Reidar holds a PhD in petroleum engineering and an MSc in mathematics from Stanford University, an MSc in petroleum engineering from the University of Tulsa, a BSc from University of Stavanger, and executive education from INSEAD (International Executive Program), Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and department of Management Sciences and Engineering, and the MIT Sloan School of Management. Reidar is an elected member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences.
